For many families, the biggest barrier to trying martial arts is not cost, schedule, or distance. It is not knowing what to expect. This is a plain walkthrough of a first Kuk Sool Won class so neither you nor your child has surprises.
Before You Arrive
What to wear
Comfortable athletic clothes: shorts or sweatpants and a t-shirt. Kuk Sool Won trains barefoot, so no special footwear is needed. No uniform is required during the free trial week.
What to bring
A water bottle. That is really it.
What to tell your child
Less is more. Something like "We are going to try a martial arts class. If you want to watch for a bit first, that is okay" removes pressure and gives them a sense of control.
When You Arrive
The school is at 1 Sutters Mill Rd Ste E in St. Peters. Arrive a few minutes early so your child can see the room and meet the instructor before class begins. Ask the instructor where parents can watch.
During Class
Classes begin by bowing in, a sign of respect to the art, the instructors, and fellow students. It takes a few seconds.
Beginners start with fundamentals: stances, basic techniques, and movement. Your child can participate at the level they are comfortable with. If they want to watch for the first few minutes, tell the instructor.
If contact or sparring is a concern for you, ask the instructor how and when partner work is introduced.
After Class
This is a good time to ask your questions: class times for your child's age group, what the first belt test involves, and what enrollment looks like after the free week.
On the Drive Home
Skip "Did you like it?" right away, which asks a child for an instant verdict. Try "What was the strangest part?" or "What was the hardest thing you tried?" Pay attention to what they bring up on their own. That is usually what caught their attention.
Some children love it from the first class. Others need a few classes to relax. Both are normal, which is one reason the trial is a full week.
